South coast Sri LankaInclude Hikkaduwa in My Itinerary
Hikkaduwa: Surf town, coral reefs, and old-school beach vibes.
Hikkaduwa is one of Sri Lanka's original beach towns. It has been drawing surfers and backpackers since the 1970s, and that history gives it a worn-in, easygoing character that newer spots lack. The main beach has a coral sanctuary where you can snorkel with sea turtles just metres from shore. Further north, a series of reef breaks attract surfers of all levels. The town strip behind the beach is lively: bars, surf shops, and cheap guesthouses stacked side by side.
What to see and do
- Snorkel the coral sanctuary. Glass-bottom boats and sea turtles feeding right off the main beach.
- Surf the main break or the reef further north. Consistent waves November to April.
- Sea turtle encounters. Turtles swim into the shallows daily and are easy to spot.
- Explore the Tsunami Museum. A sobering, important stop that documents the 2004 disaster.
- Moonstone mines in nearby Meetiyagoda. Watch gems being cut and polished.
- Night markets and beach bars along the main strip. Cheap beer, fresh seafood, live music on weekends.
Tips from locals
- Hikkaduwa is livelier and louder than the deep south. If you want quiet, head to Talalla or Tangalle instead.
- The coral is damaged in places. Snorkel carefully and never stand on the reef.
- Hikkaduwa to Galle is about 30 minutes by bus or tuk-tuk. An easy day trip in either direction.
