South coast Sri LankaInclude Hiriketiya in My Itinerary
Hiriketiya: A tiny horseshoe bay with a big personality.
Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe-shaped bay tucked between rocky headlands on Sri Lanka's deep south coast. It has gone from a sleepy fishing cove to the south coast's trendiest spot in just a few years. There is a beach break in the middle, reef breaks on both sides, yoga shalas on the cliffs, and smoothie bowls at every other cafe. It is compact enough to do everything on foot and social enough that you will know half the bay by day two.
What to see and do
- Surf the beach break in the middle of the bay. Fun, consistent, and good for intermediates.
- Morning yoga sessions on the cliff-top studios overlooking the ocean.
- Eat your way along the bay. Poke bowls, Sri Lankan curries, wood-fired pizza, all within walking distance.
- Hike the headland trail to the east for views over the bay and down the coast.
- Dikwella is a 5-minute tuk-tuk ride away. Visit the giant seated Buddha statue at Wewurukannala.
- Night sessions at the beach bars. Fairy lights, cold Lion lager, and sand between your toes.
Tips from locals
- Hiriketiya is tiny. If you want peace, stay on the hill above the bay, not right on the beach.
- The bay can get rough during bigger swells. Check conditions before swimming if you are not a surfer.
- Book accommodation early for December and January. The bay only has a few dozen places to stay and they fill up fast.
