South coast Sri Lanka

Tangalle: Where the south coast stretches out and slows down.

Tangalle is where the south coast opens up. The crowds thin out, the beaches get longer, and the pace drops to something genuinely slow. It sits at the eastern end of the south coast strip, with long stretches of empty sand backed by coconut palms and not much else. The town has a small fishing harbour, a colonial-era rest house, and a handful of quiet guesthouses spread along the coast. It is the south coast for people who want fewer people.

What to see and do

  • Silent Beach and Goyambokka Beach. Long, empty stretches of sand with almost no one around.
  • Sea turtle hatchery visits. Watch baby turtles released into the ocean at dusk.
  • Rekawa Beach for wild turtle nesting. Season runs from January to July, best seen with a local guide.
  • Mulkirigala Rock Temple. A 1,500-year-old cliff monastery with frescoes and views for miles.
  • Tangalle lagoon boat ride. Quiet water, mangroves, and birdwatching at golden hour.
  • Fresh seafood dinners on the beach. Lobster, prawns, and grilled fish at a fraction of Mirissa prices.

Tips from locals

  • Tangalle beaches have strong currents and no lifeguards. Swim carefully and watch for rip tides.
  • You will need a tuk-tuk or scooter to get around. The beaches and restaurants are spread out over several kilometres.
  • Tangalle is a great base for Yala safari day trips. The park entrance is about 90 minutes east.
