South coast Sri Lanka

Weligama: Where beginners catch their first wave.

Weligama is a wide, sandy bay with gentle whitewater that makes it the best place to learn to surf in Sri Lanka. Beyond the break, it has a growing scene of cafes, cowork spaces, and long-stay guesthouses that attract digital nomads and slow travellers. The town itself is real Sri Lanka: fish markets, temple festivals, and rice and curry joints where lunch costs less than a dollar.

What to see and do

  • Learn to surf on the bay. Mellow whitewater, sandy bottom, boards for rent everywhere.
  • Stilt fishermen at sunrise on the Koggala side. One of Sri Lanka's most iconic sights.
  • Taprobane Island, the tiny private island in the bay. Walk out at low tide for photos.
  • Cowork from one of the growing number of laptop-friendly cafes along the main road.
  • Take a tuk-tuk to Mirissa (10 min) or Hiriketiya (25 min) for a change of scenery.
  • The Sunday fish market at the harbour. Fresh tuna, prawns, and cuttlefish straight off the boats.

Tips from locals

  • Surf lessons are cheapest booked directly on the beach, not through your hotel.
  • The bay faces south, so waves are best November to April. Off-season is flat but still beautiful.
  • Stay on the western end of the bay for quieter guesthouses. The eastern end is busier and noisier.
