Ask almost any Sri Lankan about Madol Duwa and you will get a smile. For generations of readers it is the story of two boys who run away from home and set up their own life on a small, wild island, and it is one of the best-loved children's novels in the country.

What many visitors do not realise is that the island is real. It sits on Koggala Lake, a short boat ride from the mainland, a few kilometres from Galle.

Where is Madol Duwa?

Madol Duwa is a small island on Koggala Lake, in the Koggala area on the south coast, roughly 14 kilometres from Galle and not far from Ahangama. It can only be reached by boat. Boats leave from the lakeside near the Koggala road.

What is the story behind Madol Duwa?

Madol Doova was written by Martin Wickramasinghe, one of Sri Lanka's best-known writers, who lived in the Koggala area. The novel was published in 1947. Its title means Mangrove Island.

In the story, a boy named Upali, unhappy at home, runs away with his servant boy Jinna to a small island in a lake, where they build their own world. It was adapted into a well-known Sinhala film by Lester James Peries, released in 1976.

The island has since become a small literary pilgrimage for Sri Lankans who grew up with the book.

What is on Madol Duwa?

Do not expect a big attraction. The island is small, and walking around it takes around twenty minutes. The setting is mangrove forest, quiet water and birdsong.

Readers of the novel look for two things: a well and a feature known as the Sekku Gala. If you know the book, standing there is the point of the visit. If you do not, it is a pleasant, peaceful stop that is more about atmosphere than sights.

There is no separate entrance ticket for the island itself. You pay for the boat.

What else is on Koggala Lake?

Madol Duwa is one of several islands on the lake. Sources differ on the exact number, with some counting seven and others eight, and most boat tours visit a few of them in one loop.

Cinnamon Island is the most common stop. A family there shows how cinnamon is grown and processed, which can be interesting if you want to see how the quills are rolled. Some visitors enjoy it, while others feel it is set up for a sales pitch. Decide in advance whether you want to go, and do not feel obliged to buy anything.

A small temple island is often included, and is another quiet stop.

Bird Island is a good place to look for birds, and visitors also report monitor lizards and monkeys along the shoreline.

Koggala Lake also has a recent history. During the Second World War it was the water runway for a major RAF flying boat base, which we cover in our guide to Koggala's WWII flying boat base.

Is Madol Duwa worth visiting?

Yes, if you know the novel or you simply want a calm boat ride away from the beaches. For readers of Wickramasinghe, it is a small but real thrill to see the island. For everyone else, the boat trip itself is the main reward, and it is worth it mainly if you enjoy quiet water, birds and mangroves.

The honest downside is the pricing. Visitors regularly report being overcharged for the boat, and the trip can feel rushed or sales-driven if you let it. Know your price before you board and the experience is much better.

How much does the boat to Madol Duwa cost?

Reported prices for a basic round trip to Madol Duwa are around 2,000 to 2,500 rupees. Longer lake tours with several stops, such as the cinnamon island, a temple and Bird Island, usually cost more.

Prices change, and the amount often depends on who is asking. Before you get in the boat, agree three things: the total price, which islands you will visit, and how long the trip will last. Ask whether the price is per boat or per person.

How long does a Madol Duwa trip take?

The boat to Madol Duwa takes around twenty minutes each way, and exploring the island takes about the same. A fuller lake tour with several stops typically takes between one and two hours.

What is the best time to visit?

Mornings are best. It is cooler, the light is softer and the lake is quieter, and birds and wildlife are generally more active. The south coast is driest from November to April, so those months are the easiest for boat trips. Outside the dry season, check the weather before you go.

A few things I would know before visiting

Do not agree to a price you have not heard clearly.

Settle the price, the route and the duration on the shore. A friendly, firm conversation before boarding saves an awkward one afterwards.

Do not feel obliged to buy anything at the cinnamon island.

You can say no politely, and a small tip for the demonstration is a fairer way to say thanks if you enjoyed it.

Do ask for life jackets.

Boats on the lake are usually small, so make sure there are life jackets for everyone, and especially for children.

Do not litter or feed wildlife.

The islands are fragile, and the lake is a working ecosystem.

Do bring sun protection and water.

There is little shade on the water, and the heat builds up through the morning.

What to combine with Madol Duwa

Koggala is a good half-day loop. You can pair the lake with the Martin Wickramasinghe museum in Koggala, which is dedicated to the writer who created Madol Duwa, with Handunugoda Tea Estate nearby, or with Kataluwa Purwarama Temple, which we cover in our Kataluwa guide.

Is Madol Duwa worth adding to your Sri Lanka itinerary?

Yes, as a short, slow detour if you are already staying near Galle, Ahangama or Weligama. It works best as a morning activity on a day when you want something quiet between beach days. It is not a major sight, and it will not suit you if you want action.

You can stand where Upali and Jinna set up their make-believe kingdom. It takes less than an hour, and it is one of the gentlest cultural stops on the coast.
