Local tips
- The train is slower than the bus but far more memorable. Avoid weekday rush hours (7–9am, 4–7pm) when it's packed with commuters.
- Expressway buses are the fastest cheap option, but getting to Makumbura from central Colombo adds time.
- A private car is easiest if you have luggage or are travelling as a group.

Tuk-tuks can't use the expressway, and rides this long are slow and uncomfortable. A car, bus or train is a better choice.
