2 Weeks in Sri Lanka: Ancient Cities, Tea Country & the South Coast
The classic first-time loop: Sigiriya and the ancient cities, Kandy, the train through tea country to Ella, a Yala safari and the beaches of the south coast.

The route
Two weeks is the sweet spot for a first trip to Sri Lanka. It’s enough time to see the cultural triangle, ride the famous hill country train and still finish with four days on the beach.
The route runs anticlockwise — north first, then up into the hills, then down to the south coast — so the longest drives happen early and you end the trip relaxing.
Budget guide: LKR 15,000 – 30,000 per person per day (mid-range with a private driver). Entry fees at Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla are charged separately for foreign visitors and add up.. Work out your own budget →

Frequently asked questions
Is two weeks enough to see Sri Lanka?
Two weeks covers the highlights — the cultural triangle, Kandy, the hill country and the south coast — without rushing. The east and north need a separate trip or an extra week.
When is the best time for this route?
January to April is best, when the cultural triangle, the hill country and the south coast are usually all dry at the same time.
Do I need a driver for the whole trip?
Most people hire a driver for everything except the Kandy–Ella train. Your driver can take your bags ahead and meet you in Ella.
