5 Days in South Sri Lanka: Galle, Unawatuna & Mirissa
A short, unhurried south coast trip with just two bases: Galle Fort for history and food, then Mirissa for beaches, whales and sunsets.

The route
Five days is enough to get a real feel for the south coast, as long as you resist the urge to see everything. This route uses only two bases, so you unpack twice and spend almost no time in the car.
It suits a short holiday, a first or last leg of a longer Sri Lanka trip, or anyone who wants beaches without a packed schedule.
Budget guide: LKR 12,000 – 25,000 per person per day (mid-range, excluding activities). Work out your own budget →
Day by day
- Day 1
Arrive and settle into Galle
- Morning
- Land, pick up a SIM card in arrivals and meet your driver. The expressway takes you around Colombo and straight down the coast.
- Afternoon
- Check in and rest. If you have energy, wander the fort’s quiet back lanes.
- Evening
- Walk the ramparts from the clock tower to the lighthouse at sunset, then have dinner inside the fort.
- Where to stay
- Inside the fort for atmosphere and walkability, or a villa just outside for more space and better value.
- Day 2
Galle Fort and Jungle Beach
- Morning
- Explore the fort before the heat: the lighthouse, the old Dutch church, the maritime museum and the cafés on Pedlar and Church Street.
- Afternoon
- Take a tuk-tuk to Jungle Beach for snorkelling, then walk over to Unawatuna bay for a late lunch.
- Evening
- Back to the fort for drinks on a rooftop and a rice-and-curry dinner.
✦ Unawatuna’s bay is one of the calmest swimming spots on the coast — the best choice if you’re not a confident swimmer.
- Day 3
Along the coast to Mirissa
- Morning
- Leave after breakfast and stop at the stilt fishermen at Koggala and for coffee in Ahangama.
- Afternoon
- Check in and spend the afternoon on Mirissa beach.
- Evening
- Climb Coconut Tree Hill for sunset, then eat fresh grilled seafood on the beach.
- Where to stay
- A guesthouse on the quieter eastern end of the beach, or up the hill for views.
✦ The people posing on the stilts at Koggala expect a tip for photos. Agree an amount before you take pictures.
- Day 4
Whales or waves
- Morning
- From December to April, go whale watching from Mirissa harbour — boats leave around 6:30am. Outside whale season, take a beginner surf lesson in Weligama bay instead.
- Afternoon
- Rest, then visit Secret Beach, a small cove a short tuk-tuk ride from the main beach.
- Evening
- Slow last night by the sea.
✦ Choose a smaller, well-reviewed whale-watching operator and take motion-sickness tablets before you board.
- Day 5
Last swim and fly home
- Morning
- Early swim and a long breakfast.
- Afternoon
- Drive back to the airport on the expressway. Leave at least four hours before an international flight.
Frequently asked questions
Is 5 days enough for south Sri Lanka?
Five days is enough for Galle and Mirissa at a relaxed pace. If you want Tangalle, a Yala safari or more surf time, plan 7–10 days.
Should I stay in Galle or Mirissa?
Both, if you can. Galle is best for history, food and walking; Mirissa is better for beaches, whale watching and sunsets. They are only an hour apart.
