Sinhala & Tamil New Year Games
Traditional village games — greased pole climbing, pillow fights, and more.
What it is
In the days following the Sinhala & Tamil New Year, communities across Sri Lanka organise traditional games (avurudu krida). These include climbing greased poles (kotta pora), blindfolded pot-breaking (kana mutti bindeema), tug-of-war, sack races, pillow fights on elevated beams, and the iconic game of smashing pots while blindfolded. Village grounds come alive with these hilarious and competitive events. Joining in or watching is one of the most genuinely fun cultural experiences you can have in Sri Lanka.
Tips for visitors
- Ask locals where the nearest avurudu games are happening
- You will almost certainly be invited to participate — go for it
- Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty
