The Gathering (Elephant Migration)
Hundreds of wild elephants gather at Minneriya — one of Asia's greatest wildlife spectacles.
What it is
The Gathering at Minneriya National Park is one of the largest wild elephant congregations in Asia. As the dry season progresses (August-October), water sources in surrounding forests dry up, and herds of wild elephants converge on the Minneriya reservoir to drink, bathe, and graze. At peak times, 200-300+ elephants can be seen in a single afternoon. It is an awe-inspiring sight — families with tiny calves, young males play-fighting, and massive tuskers. September is typically the best month. Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park serve as alternative gathering sites when water levels at Minneriya are high.
Tips for visitors
- September offers the best chance to see large herds
- Afternoon safaris (2-6pm) are best — elephants come to the tank to drink
- Choose a jeep driver who maintains distance from the animals
- Do not feed or approach the elephants
- Bring binoculars for the best views without getting too close
