Sri Lanka in August

European summer holidays and The Gathering

August is busy with European families on summer holidays, so prices tick up even in low season. The east coast and cultural triangle are excellent, and The Gathering — hundreds of elephants around Minneriya's shrinking reservoir — peaks now.

Weather around the island in August

South & west coast

Mixed

Mostly drier days with occasional showers. Still windy with rough seas.

East coast

Great

Dry and sunny. Busy — book Arugam Bay early.

Hill country

Mixed

Variable. Kandy Esala Perahera often runs into August.

Cultural triangle

Great

Dry and hot. Peak elephant gathering at Minneriya.

The sea on the south coast

Rough on the south coast, ideal on the east. South coast whale trips do not run in this season.

Best things to do in August

  • The Gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks
  • Nallur festival in Jaffna — 25 days of processions
  • Kandy Esala Perahera if it falls in August that year
  • Surf and beach days on the east coast

Coming south in August?

It's not peak beach weather, but the south coast is far from closed. Expect quieter towns, lower prices and rough seas, so choose places with plenty to do on land.

What to pack

  • Sun protection
  • Light, modest clothing for temples
  • Binoculars for safaris

Local tip

✦ Do the Minneriya safari in the late afternoon. That's when the elephants come down to the water, and the light is better for photos.
