Most breakfast advice for this stretch of coast points you to a café with a smoothie bowl and a laptop crowd. That is fine, but it is not what people living in Dikwella eat.
They eat from bakeries. A bun or two, something savoury, a sweet thing for later, and tea. Green Beach Bake House on the main road in Dikwella is one of those places, and it is open long before most cafés have switched their lights on.
There is almost nothing about it online, so this guide is based on a visit and the price board on the wall. It covers where it is, when it opens, what to order, what it costs and how to fit it into a morning near Hiriketiya.
What is Green Beach Bake House?
Green Beach Bake House is a small local bakery on the main road through Dikwella, under a bright yellow sign with a palm tree on it. From the street you see a glass display counter at the front. It is a place to buy fresh buns, rolls, short eats and cakes by the piece, not a sit-down restaurant.
If you have read our guide to what is inside a Sri Lankan bakery, this is the real-life version of it, at local prices.
Where is Green Beach Bake House?
It is on the main coastal road in Dikwella, close to the Green Beach beachfront guesthouse and restaurant. The shop sign gives the address as Matara Road, Dikwella. Beside it you will see a Sri Lanka Insurance office and a building supplies shop, which makes a handy landmark.
In Google Maps, search for "Green Beach Dikwella" and look for the bakery on the main road next to it, because the bakery itself barely shows up on maps.
What time does Green Beach Bake House open?
It opens very early, around 2 am, and stays open until about 6 pm. That suits bakers and fishermen, and it means you can pick up breakfast at almost any hour of the morning, including before a dawn surf or an early drive to Yala.
Small bakeries change their hours without notice, especially on Poya days and public holidays, so do not plan a special trip on the strength of one line in a blog post. Our guide to Poya days in Sri Lanka explains what usually closes.
What can you eat for breakfast at Green Beach Bake House?
The price board on the wall is written in Sinhala, so here is what it says. The left sheet lists the savoury buns: egg bun, fish bun, sausage bun, sambol bun, long and round omelette buns, and jam buns. It also has jam banis, a wafer cake, a donut and a fish finger.
The right sheet lists more of the same: cream banis, tea banis, rose bread, pizza bun, burger bun and rolls, along with whole cakes by weight, including a 1 kg butter cake and a chocolate cake. A slice of iced cake is on a separate note above.
Fish buns and egg buns are the classic Sri Lankan breakfast order. The bun is soft and a little sweet, and the filling is spicy, so it is a very different start to the day from toast and avocado. If you want to understand why this food is eaten everywhere in the country, see our guide to what to eat in south Sri Lanka.
How much does breakfast cost at Green Beach Bake House?
Very little. These are some of the prices we could read clearly on the board. Handwritten stickers show some have been updated, so treat them as a guide and check at the counter.
An egg bun and a fish bun are Rs 60 each, a sausage bun is Rs 70, and a sambol bun or a jam bun is Rs 50. Omelette buns are Rs 60 for the long one and Rs 80 for the round one. At those prices, an egg bun and a fish bun come to Rs 120, which is less than a coffee at most south coast cafés. For more on what things cost, see what 10,000 rupees gets you down south.
Is Green Beach Bake House good for a proper breakfast?
Yes, if your idea of a proper breakfast is a filling local one. Two buns and something sweet will keep most people going until lunch, and the early opening hours mean you are not waiting for anything to start.
It is not a café. There is a seating area, but you can get a takeaway as well, eat on a wall by the road, or take your bag to the beach. If you want a plate of rice and curry later, Priyanka Restaurant in Dikwella is a good lunch stop nearby.

Final thoughts
Green Beach Bake House is not a destination. It is a very good example of how people on this coast really eat breakfast, cheaply, early and from a glass counter on the main road.
Pick up two buns, take them to the beach, and spend the money you saved on a surf lesson.
