Christmas
Celebrated by Sri Lanka's Christian community with decorations and breudher cake.
What it is
Christmas is a public holiday celebrated enthusiastically in Sri Lanka, especially in Negombo, Colombo, and the northern coastal towns. Churches hold midnight masses, homes are decorated with stars and lights, and the traditional Sri Lankan Christmas cake (breudher — a Dutch-influenced rich cake) is shared among neighbours of all faiths. Colombo's malls and hotels go all out with decorations, and it is a festive time to be in the city. The south coast tourist areas also embrace the season, with many restaurants offering Christmas dinners.
Tips for visitors
- Try breudher cake — available at bakeries across the island
- Attend a midnight mass at a historic church for the full experience
- Hotels and restaurants in tourist areas offer Christmas dinners — book ahead
