New Year's Eve & Day
Celebrations at hotels, beach parties, and fireworks across the south coast.
What it is
New Year's Eve is celebrated widely in tourist areas with beach parties, hotel galas, fireworks, and live music. The south coast — particularly Mirissa, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, and Galle — has the liveliest celebrations. Many hotels host special dinners and countdown events. Fireworks light up the coastline at midnight. Colombo's hotels and rooftop bars also offer upscale celebrations. Book restaurants and events well in advance — this is the busiest night of the year in tourist areas.
Tips for visitors
- Book accommodation and dinner well in advance
- Beach parties in Mirissa and Unawatuna are popular with backpackers
- Hotel galas in Galle Fort are more upscale
- Expect premium pricing everywhere
- Tuk-tuks will charge more — negotiate or arrange transport in advance
