Eid ul-Fitr (Ramazan Festival)
Celebration marking the end of Ramadan — feasting, charity, and prayers.
What it is
Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. Sri Lanka's Muslim community (~10% of the population) celebrates with morning prayers at mosques, feasting with family, wearing new clothes, and giving charity (zakat al-fitr). The best places to experience the celebrations are in Muslim-majority areas like Beruwala, Kattankudy, and parts of Colombo. Watalappam (a traditional Sri Lankan Muslim dessert made with jaggery and coconut milk) is a must-try during this period.
Tips for visitors
- Try watalappam — the quintessential Sri Lankan Eid sweet
- Respect prayer times at mosques
- Muslim-owned businesses may have adjusted hours during Ramadan
