Good Friday & Easter
Christian holy days observed by Sri Lanka's Catholic community.
What it is
Easter is a significant celebration for Sri Lanka's Catholic and Christian minority (~7% of the population). The most notable observances happen in Negombo ('Little Rome'), along the western coast, and in parts of the north. Churches hold passion plays, processions, and midnight masses. The fishing village of Duwa near Negombo stages a particularly dramatic open-air passion play. Good Friday is a public holiday.
Tips for visitors
- Visit St. Mary's Church in Negombo for the best Easter experience
- Good Friday is a solemn day — festivities pick up on Easter Sunday
- Hot cross buns and Easter treats are available at many bakeries
