Medin Poya
Marks Buddha's first visit to his father's palace after enlightenment.
What it is
Medin Poya commemorates Buddha's visit to his father King Suddhodana's palace in Kapilavastu after attaining enlightenment. Buddhist temples across Sri Lanka hold special sermons and meditation sessions. It is a quieter Poya day — most locals visit their local temple, offer flowers, and observe sil (meditation retreat). Shops and bars close or operate with limited hours as with all Poya days.
Tips for visitors
- Alcohol is not sold on Poya days — plan ahead
- Many restaurants in tourist areas still operate normally
- A peaceful day to visit Buddhist temples
