Kandy Esala Perahera
Asia's grandest Buddhist procession — 10 nights of elephants, dancers, and fire in Kandy.
What it is
The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the oldest and most magnificent festivals in Asia. Over 10 consecutive nights, a grand procession parades through the streets of Kandy, centred around the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha housed in the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa). The procession features over 100 caparisoned elephants, thousands of Kandyan dancers, drummers, fire breathers, whip crackers, and torch bearers. The Randoli Perahera (final 5 nights) is the most spectacular, with the Maligawa Tusker carrying the sacred casket. Seating along the route sells out months in advance — book early. This is a must-see if you are in Sri Lanka during this period.
Tips for visitors
- Book accommodation and perahera seating months in advance
- The final night (Randoli Perahera) is the grandest — try to attend
- Dress respectfully — this is a religious procession
- Arrive 2-3 hours early to secure your spot
- Be mindful of the elephants — do not use flash photography
- The procession starts around 7-8pm and runs for several hours
