Sri Lanka in July

Festivals in Kandy and Kataragama, surf on the east coast

July is festival month. The Kandy Esala Perahera usually starts in late July or early August, and the Kataragama festival draws pilgrims from across the island. The south coast is drier than in May and June, but the seas stay rough.

Weather around the island in July

South & west coast

Mixed

Drier spells and sunshine, but windy with rough seas.

East coast

Great

Peak surf in Arugam Bay; sunny and dry.

Hill country

Mixed

Showers on the western side; Kandy is busy with the Perahera.

Cultural triangle

Great

Dry. Elephants start gathering at Minneriya.

The sea on the south coast

Still rough on the south coast. Beginner surf schools in Weligama run on the calmer inside sections.

Best things to do in July

  • Kandy Esala Perahera — nights of torch-lit processions with elephants and dancers
  • Kataragama festival near Tissamaharama, with fire-walking ceremonies
  • Arugam Bay's main point break at its best
  • Elephant safaris at Minneriya and Kaudulla

Coming south in July?

It's not peak beach weather, but the south coast is far from closed. Expect quieter towns, lower prices and rough seas, so choose places with plenty to do on land.

What to pack

  • Light layers
  • A windproof jacket for boat trips
  • Comfortable shoes for long festival nights

Local tip

✦ Hotel prices in Kandy jump during the Perahera. If you want to watch from a seat rather than the street, buy tickets through your hotel a few weeks ahead.
