Kataragama Festival
Multi-faith festival at Kataragama with fire walking and devotional acts.
What it is
The Kataragama Festival is a remarkable multi-faith celebration held at the Kataragama sacred complex in southern Sri Lanka. Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, and indigenous Vedda communities all participate. The most dramatic spectacle is the fire-walking ceremony, where devotees walk across burning coals as an act of faith. Kavadi dancers carry elaborate structures pierced into their bodies, and puja ceremonies continue day and night. The festival runs for about two weeks, coinciding with the Esala season. Kataragama is one of the most spiritually intense places in Sri Lanka.
Tips for visitors
- The fire-walking ceremony is the highlight — usually in the final days
