Leopard Safari Season (Yala)
Best time to spot leopards in Yala — the highest leopard density in the world.
What it is
Yala National Park (Block 1) has the highest density of leopards in the world, and February to July is the prime time to see them. As water sources dry up, animals concentrate around remaining waterholes, making sightings more likely. Early morning safaris (5:30am departure) offer the best chances. Yala closes for the month of September for maintenance. If Yala is too crowded, Wilpattu National Park in the northwest offers a quieter alternative with good leopard populations.
Tips for visitors
- Book early morning safaris (5:30am start) for the best leopard sightings
- Choose a tracker/guide with a good reputation — quality varies hugely
- Yala closes every September
- Avoid holiday weekends when the park gets extremely crowded with local visitors
- Bring a telephoto lens or binoculars
