Sri Lanka in February

The best all-round month for a full island loop

February is reliably dry on the south coast and in the hill country, and the cultural triangle has usually dried out too. If you want beaches, tea country and ancient cities in one trip, this is the month.

Weather around the island in February

South & west coast

Great

Dry, sunny and calm. Classic beach weather from Bentota to Tangalle.

East coast

Mixed

Rain is easing but seas are still unsettled. Better from late March.

Hill country

Great

Usually the driest month in the hills — clear views from Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak.

Cultural triangle

Good

Dry, warm and green after the rains. Good climbing weather for Sigiriya.

The sea on the south coast

Still calm and clear. Whale watching continues out of Mirissa, and reef breaks around Weligama and Hiriketiya are friendly.

Best things to do in February

  • Navam Perahera in Colombo — elephants and dancers around Beira Lake on the February full moon
  • Independence Day (4 February) parades and flag-raising
  • Leopard spotting in Yala as water holes start to shrink
  • The Kandy–Ella train through the tea country, with clear skies

What to pack

  • Light clothes for the coast
  • A fleece for Nuwara Eliya evenings
  • Shoes you can slip off at temples

Local tip

✦ Book the Kandy–Ella train seats as soon as reservations open. February is busy and the reserved carriages sell out fast.
