Maha Shivaratri
Hindu night of devotion to Lord Shiva with fasting and all-night prayers.
What it is
Maha Shivaratri ('Great Night of Shiva') is a major Hindu festival observed with fasting, meditation, and all-night vigils at Shiva temples across Sri Lanka. Devotees stay awake through the night chanting and performing pujas. The most significant celebrations take place at Munneswaram and Koneswaram temples. It is a deeply spiritual occasion, quieter and more introspective than other Hindu festivals.
Tips for visitors
- Temples are open all night — you can visit and observe
- Remove shoes before entering temples
- This is a solemn occasion — dress and behave respectfully
