What it is

Poson marks the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka by Arahat Mahinda in the 3rd century BC. The main celebrations take place at Mihintale (where Mahinda met King Devanampiya Tissa) and at the ancient city of Anuradhapura. Thousands of pilgrims climb the Mihintale staircase, and both cities are lit with lanterns and pandals. It is the second most important Buddhist festival after Vesak and a wonderful time to visit the Cultural Triangle.

Tips for visitors

  • Visit Mihintale at dawn for the best experience — the climb is cooler and the views are stunning
  • Wear white if you want to blend in with pilgrims
  • No alcohol sales
  • Expect crowds at Mihintale and Anuradhapura
