Sri Lanka's south coast is one of the best surf destinations in Asia, and it's still not crowded. The season runs from November to April on the south and west coasts, and the variety of breaks means there's something for everyone. First-timers and experienced surfers chasing overhead barrels alike.
1. Weligama Bay is where most people start, and for good reason. It's a long, sandy-bottom beach break with gentle whitewater that's perfect for learning. Board rental is cheap, instructors are everywhere, and you can walk to food after your session. Go early morning before the wind picks up.
2. Mirissa Point sits at the east end of Mirissa beach. It's a right-hand reef break that works best on a mid-to-high tide. More consistent than Weligama and less crowded than you'd expect. Good for intermediates who want something more than whitewater.
3. Plantation Point, just east of Weligama, is a local favourite. It's a left-hand point break over rock that gets hollow when it's bigger. Best at dawn before the crowd arrives. The kottu shop 200m up the road is essential post-surf fuel.
4. Hiriketiya Bay is the tiny horseshoe bay that's become the south coast's social hub. There's a beach break in the middle and reef breaks on both sides. It gets busy, but the vibe is good and the wave is fun. Best for intermediate surfers.
5. Rams Right, near Tangalle, is the south coast's most serious wave. A fast, hollow right-hander over shallow reef. For experienced surfers only, and only when the swell is clean. Check conditions carefully before paddling out.
6. Lazy Left, next to Rams, is mellower and works well on smaller days. A long, peeling left that's good for longboarders and surfers who want a cruisy session without the intensity of Rams.
7. Kabalana (The Rock) near Ahangama is a punchy beach break that picks up swell well. Named after the large rock in the lineup. Can get powerful on bigger days. Popular with intermediate to advanced surfers. The cafes along the beach are great for watching the action.
