February is the month most locals would recommend to someone asking when to visit the south coast, and it is the month that most first-time visitors overlook in favour of the more marketed December and January peak. Here is why it tends to be the best month of the season.

The weather in February is essentially the same as January. Clear skies, 27 to 30 degrees, calm sea, minimal rain. There is no meaningful difference in conditions between the two months. What is different is the crowd and the price. The post-Christmas and New Year travellers who filled January have mostly left by the first week of February, and the next wave of peak-season visitors has not yet arrived in the same numbers. The beaches are less crowded, the guesthouses have more availability, and prices at most properties are slightly lower than their January peak. The combination of January-quality weather with slightly more room to breathe makes February the practical sweet spot.

Whale watching in February is at its best. Blue whale sightings are at peak frequency through February and the first half of March. The sea is calm and the boats can reach the whale watching zone with the least discomfort of any time in the season. If whale watching is the main reason for the trip and you have any flexibility on timing, February is the month to aim for. Book the boat tour in advance regardless as reputable operators with good reviews do fill up.

Surfing in February is the best of the season. The swells are consistent and well-shaped, the wind is typically light and offshore in the mornings, and the water temperature is warm. Both Hiriketiya and Ahangama are at or near their best surf of the year in February. The lineups are busy but not unreasonably so. February is the month when the most dedicated travelling surfers arrive on the coast, which means the atmosphere at the surf-oriented towns is energetic.

One practical note: Sri Lanka's Independence Day falls on February 4th. It is a national public holiday and some businesses and government services will be closed. It does not meaningfully disrupt a travel itinerary but is worth knowing if you are planning any administrative tasks around that date.

The Galle Literary Festival, which usually runs in late January or very early February depending on the year, adds a cultural dimension to the Galle experience if your dates align with it. Check the specific dates for the year you are travelling. It brings good energy to the fort for a few days and the programme is worth looking at.

February is the month where the south coast delivers everything it is capable of at a pace that actually allows you to enjoy it.
