Duruthu Perahera
Grand procession at Kelaniya Temple marking Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka.
What it is
Duruthu Perahera commemorates Lord Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka, which Buddhists believe took place at Kelaniya, near Colombo. A spectacular procession of elephants, Kandyan dancers, fire dancers, and whip crackers parades through the streets around Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya. The temple is beautifully illuminated, and thousands gather to watch. It is one of the most important peraheras outside Kandy.
Tips for visitors
- Arrive early for a good viewing spot
- Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered
- The procession runs late into the night — plan transport in advance
