Tamil Thai Pongal
Hindu harvest thanksgiving festival celebrating the sun god.
What it is
Thai Pongal is a multi-day Hindu harvest festival dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. Families boil rice in milk until it overflows the pot — a symbol of abundance. Homes are decorated with kolam (rice flour patterns), and cattle are bathed and honoured. In the north and east of Sri Lanka, this is the biggest celebration of the year. Even in the south, Hindu communities mark it with temple visits and family feasts.
Tips for visitors
- Visit a Hindu kovil (temple) to see the celebrations
- Try the traditional pongal rice dish — sweet and savoury versions
- Respect the religious rituals and ask before photographing
