Sri Lanka in January

Peak season on the south coast

January is one of the best months to be on the south coast: dry days, flat calm mornings and whales off Mirissa. The trade-off is that everyone else knows it, so the first two weeks are the busiest and most expensive of the year.

Weather around the island in January

South & west coast

Great

Dry, sunny and around 27–31°C. Calm seas make this prime swimming and snorkelling weather.

East coast

Wet

Northeast monsoon. Heavy rain spells and rough seas — most of Arugam Bay is closed.

Hill country

Good

Mostly dry with cold nights in Nuwara Eliya (can drop below 10°C). Adam's Peak pilgrimage season is on.

Cultural triangle

Mixed

The tail end of the monsoon can still bring showers, improving through the month.

The sea on the south coast

Calm, clear water across the south. Good for beginners at Weligama, snorkelling at Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa, and whale watching from Mirissa.

Best things to do in January

  • Blue whale watching from Mirissa harbour — go early, seas are calmest before 9am
  • Climb Adam's Peak overnight for sunrise (season runs December to May)
  • Galle Literary Festival, usually held in Galle Fort in January
  • Yala safari — the park is open and the dry season is setting in

What to pack

  • Light cotton and linen
  • A warm layer if you're heading to the hills
  • Reef-safe sunscreen

Local tip

✦ If your dates are flexible, arrive after 10 January. The Christmas–New Year crowd clears out and room rates usually ease off a little.
