Hill Country Cool Season
The driest, coolest weather in the hill country — perfect for hiking and tea plantations.
What it is
January to March offers the best weather in Sri Lanka's hill country. Temperatures in Nuwara Eliya and Ella hover around 15-22C, skies are clear, and the landscapes are lush from the preceding rains. This is the ideal time for hikes (Horton Plains, Ella Rock, Knuckles Range), visiting tea plantations, and taking the famous Kandy-Ella train. Morning mist burns off to reveal stunning vistas. Nights can be cold — pack a light jacket.
Tips for visitors
- The Kandy-Ella train is one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world
- Book train tickets in advance — they sell out
- Pack layers — temperatures drop significantly at night
- Early mornings at Horton Plains offer the clearest views of World's End
