East Coast Surf Season
Arugam Bay and the east coast light up with world-class waves.
What it is
When the southwest monsoon shuts down the south coast, the east coast comes alive. Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's most famous surf destination, offering a world-class right-hand point break. Nearby spots like Pottuvil Point, Whiskey Point, and Peanut Farm offer variety for all levels. The east coast is drier, less developed, and has a different cultural feel — more Tamil and Muslim communities. June to August offers the most consistent waves.
Tips for visitors
- Arugam Bay's main point is best for intermediate to advanced surfers
- Beginners should head to Baby Point or Peanut Farm
- Accommodation is basic compared to the south coast
- The scene is mellow and backpacker-friendly
