Sri Lanka in May

Monsoon on the south coast — head east and north instead

The southwest monsoon arrives in May and the south coast gets its heaviest rain of the year, with rough seas and red flags on many beaches. It's a great month for the cultural triangle and east coast, and prices on the south coast drop sharply.

Weather around the island in May

South & west coast

Wet

Heavy rain spells and big swells. Swimming is unsafe on many beaches; some cafés close.

East coast

Great

Dry, sunny and calm. Peak beach season in Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah.

Hill country

Mixed

Wet on the western slopes. Ella and the eastern side stay drier.

Cultural triangle

Great

Dry and hot. Great for Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa.

The sea on the south coast

Rough. Rip currents are a real risk on exposed south coast beaches — only swim where locals do, and never when flags are up.

Best things to do in May

  • Vesak — lantern displays, illuminated pandals and free food stalls (dansal) everywhere
  • Sigiriya and the ancient cities in dry weather
  • East coast beaches: Pigeon Island snorkelling and Pasikudah's shallow bay
  • Mango season — the fruit stalls are at their best

Festivals, holidays and seasons in May

Coming south in May?

It's not peak beach weather, but the south coast is far from closed. Expect quieter towns, lower prices and rough seas, so choose places with plenty to do on land.

What to pack

  • A proper rain jacket
  • Sandals that can get wet
  • A dry bag for electronics

Local tip

✦ Vesak is the best time to see Sri Lankan generosity — join the queue at a dansal for free rice, curry or ice cream. It's not considered rude to accept.
