Vesak (Buddha's Birthday)
Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist festival — birth, enlightenment, and passing of Buddha.
What it is
Vesak is the most sacred day in the Sri Lankan Buddhist calendar, celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and death (parinirvana) of Lord Buddha. The entire island is transformed with colourful pandals (large illuminated panels depicting Jataka stories), lanterns, and dansalas (free food and drink stalls set up by communities). Streets are decorated with lights, and many homes display handmade Vesak lanterns. The celebration spans two days (Vesak and the day after). It is a truly magical time to be in Sri Lanka — entire neighbourhoods light up, and the generosity of the dansala culture is remarkable.
Tips for visitors
- Walk through Colombo at night to see the pandals — especially along Bauddhaloka Mawatha
- Try the free food and drinks at dansalas — locals are proud to share
- No alcohol is sold during Vesak — plan accordingly
- Dress modestly when visiting temples
- Photography of pandals and lanterns is welcome and encouraged
