May Day (Workers' Day)
International Workers' Day with political rallies and parades.
What it is
May Day is a public holiday in Sri Lanka celebrated with political rallies, trade union marches, and public speeches, primarily in Colombo. Political parties organise large gatherings and the capital can see significant road closures and crowds. Outside Colombo, it is a quiet day off. Tourist areas in the south are generally unaffected.
Tips for visitors
- Avoid central Colombo if you want to skip political crowds
- Tourist areas in the south operate normally
- Banks and government offices are closed
