Dolphin Watching Season (Kalpitiya)
Pods of 500-2000 spinner dolphins off Kalpitiya — one of the largest gatherings worldwide.
What it is
Kalpitiya, on the northwest coast, offers one of the world's largest spinner dolphin congregations. Pods of 500-2,000+ dolphins can be seen on morning boat trips between November and April. The sight of hundreds of dolphins leaping and spinning simultaneously is extraordinary. Boats depart around 6am from Kalpitiya. Sperm whales are also occasionally spotted further offshore.
Tips for visitors
- Choose operators that do not chase dolphins — responsible viewing only
- Morning trips (6am departure) are standard
- Combine with kitesurfing if visiting May-October
