Whale Watching Season (Mirissa)
Blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins off the south coast — Mirissa is the hub.
What it is
Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to see blue whales — the largest animals ever to have lived. From November to April, blue whales, sperm whales, Bryde's whales, and large pods of dolphins migrate along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Whale watching boats depart from Mirissa harbour early in the morning (around 6:30am) and spend 4-6 hours at sea. Sightings are not guaranteed, but success rates are high during peak season (January-March). Choose a responsible operator that follows whale watching guidelines — no chasing, minimum distance of 300m, and no crowding the animals.
Tips for visitors
- Book with a responsible operator — ask about their approach distance policy
- Take seasickness medication before boarding if prone to motion sickness
- Best months are January to March for blue whale sightings
- Early morning departures are standard — be at the harbour by 6am
- Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a waterproof layer
