South Coast Surf Season (Main)
Best surf conditions on the south and west coasts — consistent swells and offshore winds.
What it is
The south and west coasts of Sri Lanka receive their best surf between November and April, when the northeast monsoon creates clean offshore conditions. Weligama Bay offers the best beginner waves in the country, Hiriketiya has a punchy beach break, Mirissa offers point breaks, and Hikkaduwa has consistent reef breaks. This is also peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and busier lineups. Water is warm year-round (27-29C), so boardshorts or a rashguard is all you need.
Tips for visitors
- Weligama is the best spot for beginners — mellow, consistent waves
- Rent boards locally — no need to bring your own
- Respect the lineup and local surfers
- Early mornings have the cleanest conditions
