Diving Season (South Coast)
Clear waters and calm seas make this the best time for diving and snorkelling.
What it is
November to April offers the best diving and snorkelling conditions on Sri Lanka's south and west coasts. Visibility ranges from 10-30m, seas are calm, and water temperature sits at 27-29C. Key dive sites include Hikkaduwa coral reefs, Unawatuna (wreck dives and reef dives), and the SS Conch wreck off Galle. For snorkelling, Hikkaduwa and Pigeon Island (east coast, June-September) are the top spots. PADI dive courses are widely available.
Tips for visitors
- Hikkaduwa has the best shallow reef for snorkelling
- PADI Open Water courses cost LKR 90,000-120,000 at south coast centres
- Do not touch or stand on coral
- Reef sharks are harmless — enjoy the sighting
