Festivals, holidays and seasons in September

Coming south in September?

It's not peak beach weather, but the south coast is far from closed. Expect quieter towns, lower prices and rough seas, so choose places with plenty to do on land.

What to pack

  • Light rain layer
  • Insect repellent
  • Quick-dry clothes

Local tip

✦ Yala's main block has traditionally closed for several weeks around September–October. Check this year's dates before you book, and use Udawalawe or Bundala as a backup.
