Sri Lanka in October

The wettest month — but the cheapest and emptiest

October brings the second inter-monsoon, and much of the southwest gets its heaviest rain of the year in short, intense afternoon and evening downpours. Mornings are often clear. If you don't mind the rain, it's the quietest and cheapest month.

Festivals, holidays and seasons in October

Coming south in October?

It's not peak beach weather, but the south coast is far from closed. Expect quieter towns, lower prices and rough seas, so choose places with plenty to do on land.

What to pack

  • A good rain jacket
  • Quick-dry everything
  • A power bank — storms can cause short power cuts

Local tip

✦ Plan active days early. Beach, surf and sightseeing before 1pm, then a long lunch or a spa while the afternoon storm passes.
